Knowing when to say no is most of the job

On a page meant to win work, this is the thing worth saying first.

A rug is usually worth more to you than the cleaning costs. That single fact should govern how anybody approaches this, and the companies that run every rug through the same process regardless of what it is are the ones that ruin them.

So the first thing that happens is identification. Fiber, construction, dye stability, and whether the rug is genuinely suited to being cleaned where it lies. If it is not, you get told before anything touches it, along with where to take it instead.

We decline more rugs in this town than in any other, and that is the correct outcome rather than a problem.

What in-home cleaning is good for

Plenty, and it is worth being equally clear so this does not read as a page about what we will not do.

Machine-made synthetics of any size. Low-pile rugs in sound condition. Wool rugs that are machine-made and carrying ordinary traffic soil. And anything large or awkward enough that moving it creates more risk than cleaning it in place, which describes a great many room-size rugs in these houses.

For those, in-home work is not a compromise. The furniture comes off as part of the service, the rug never leaves the house, and there is no transport risk at either end.

The order of operations matters

One technical point that separates a proper job from a fast one.

Dry soil comes out before any moisture goes in. Always, on every rug. Wetting a rug that is full of dry grit turns that grit into mud in the foundation of the pile, which drives it deeper rather than lifting it out.

A company that goes straight to wet cleaning has made the rug worse while appearing to make it better, and on a grit-heavy rug in this climate that is a meaningful difference rather than a technicality.

What we will not do

No viscose in the home, regardless of who asks. It loses strength when wet and browning is common even carefully handled. Full explanation.

No surface treatment on a urine-contaminated rug where the contamination has reached the foundation. It will not hold and taking money for it would be selling you a smell that returns. More here.

No promising a stain will come out before we have looked at it. Some do and some are dye loss, which nothing reverses.

No pretending in-home is right for every rug. Hand-knotted, antique and dye-unstable rugs need immersion washing off site, and we are not that.
